Ultrasonographer Technologist

Position Information: The Ultrasonographer functions as a healthcare provider who will be working under the delegated authority of the supervising physician, serves as a medical imaging professional providing clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Ultrasonographer role and responsibilities include providing diagnostic medical sonography services and its various clinical specialties. The Ultrasonographer activities are performed consistent with their education and training, and in accordance with facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing ultrasonic equipment to locate, evaluate and record critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. Prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures to patients. Monitor and interpret medical diagnostic scans.
  • Assists physicians with procedures, providing sonographic guidance during process, obtains necessary supplies and equipment and monitors patient needs assisting physicians with patient support.
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infections disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination.
  • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information.
  • Ensure that the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard “medical necessity.”
  • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures.
  • Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination ordered by the supervising physician in accordance with professional and facility protocols.
  • Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonography procedures.
  • Apply independent judgment during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images.
  • Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional.
  • Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination.
  • Review examination images, synthesize examination results, and prepare the preliminary findings.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) and facility policies, and procedures.
  • Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Sonographer.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and members of the healthcare team.
  • Teaches ultrasound procedures and techniques to visitors in the department such as residents, students, fellows and new sonographers.

Qualifications:

  • Required Education: Associate’s degree in allied health and completion of an approved one-year program in Ultrasound Technology.
  • Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 24 months experience in lieu of the Associate’s Degree.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical: Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; frequently standing, stooping, and walking.
  • Environmental: Exposure to radiation; exposure to patients who are ill.

Certifications or Licenses:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications.
  • ARDMS Registration, required
  • Registered in vascular, required within the first 12 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate sonographic equipment.
  • Ability to evaluate sonograms in order acquire appropriate diagnostic information.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to acquire diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the health care team.
  • Ability to follow established department procedures.
  • Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
