Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

The mission of the Platform Product Group engineers is to build a trusted, scalable and compliant platform to operate with speed, efficiency and quality. Our teams build and maintain the platforms critical to the existence of Coinbase. There are many teams that make up this group which include Product Foundations (i.e. Identity, Payment, Risk, Proofing & Regulatory, Finhub), Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the Datastores (Infrastructure) team at Coinbase. The team's charter includes all OLTP databases including MongoDB, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Sharded SQL, analytics databases like Clickhouse and caching solutions like Redis/ memcache. The team builds and runs highly available, efficient, and high-performance distributed-database services that are being hit millions of times per second by the products at Coinbase. Here is an example of Infrastructure the team built for Atlas. We have built the first (known to us) predictive auto scaling database technology in the industry working at Coinbase scale.

The team is responsible for advising customer teams on the right database technology for their needs and providing fully paved solutions. We are working on industry defining technology that meets the needs for Web3.

What you'll be doing:

  • Design, implement and operate Coinbase’s distributed database technologies (e.g. MongoDB, Postgres, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redis, Memcached).
  • Develop the future of our database systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
  • Use your experience to guide other engineers and leadership on the right technical choices while anticipating the business’s needs, and work with various vendors in the database/storage space.
  • Write high quality, well tested code to meet the needs of your customers.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and be on call for engineering and operational support.
  • Stay on top of industry trends and emerging technologies in databases to continuously enhance our systems and processes.

What we look for in you:

  • You have at least 2+ years of industry experience with a proven track record of building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, highly available distributed systems.
  • You have hands-on experience with large-scale database deployments in a production environment.
  • You have experience in cloud distributed databases (e.g., MongoDB, Postgres, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redis, Memcached).
  • You have backend service and tool development experience in Golang, Java or Python.
  • You have strong communication skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Haves:

  • Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services.
  • You have experience with incident response, disaster recovery, and are interested in making systems highly available.
  • You have a solid understanding of distributed database architecture, performance tuning and reliability.
