Job Summary

Directs, supervises, and coordinates machining, welding, painting, and/or assembly operations requiring a broad knowledge of machining and welding technology, assembly procedures, and journeyman trade skill applications. Supervises a crew of 10 to 30+ employees involved in the production/finishing/assembly of the Company’s products. Responsible for quality, quantity, manufacturing costs, meeting production schedules and on-time shipment of our product lines. May supervise various functions, including machining, sheave forming, galvanizing, welding, assembly, painting, press operations, radial drills, and small drills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential)

  1. Works under the direction of the Manufacturing Manager.*
  2. Supervises a crew or crews of employees involved in the machining, welding, sheave forming, finishing and/or assembly of the Company’s products.*
  3. May direct and supervise difficult multi-tool set-ups and machine operations to product standard but complex parts or one of a kind special and custom parts, having critical interrelated dimensions, intricate contours, and close and exacting tolerances and finish requirements.*
  4. Responsible for quality, quantity, economical manufacturing costs, meeting production schedules, proper use of material and efficient work flow consistent with manufacturing objectives and profit goals.*
  5. Organizes and assigns work to crew members to utilize available skills, knowledge, experience, man-hours, machines, and tooling in a manner that optimizes production costs and quality workmanship.*
  6. Analyzes and diagnoses machining and tooling problems, machine malfunctions, etc. to expedite and coordinate corrective procedures and prevent excessive downtime and interrupted schedules. Coordinates maintenance activities with the Maintenance Department.*
  7. Provides instructions and guidance to employees and maintains close watch over setup procedures, machining operations, finishing work and/or assembly procedures.*
  8. Coordinates inspection and quality control activities with the QA department to insure finished goods meet Company and customer standards. Completes corrective action request forms if there is a problem to be corrected.*
  9. Provides information and coordinates with engineering, production, scheduling, purchasing, etc. to assist with and/or to implement new programs related to work simplification, cost reduction, new tooling and methods, man-hour planning, scheduling, machine repair and maintenance.*
  10. Participates in Lean/OPEX activities. Performs job and supervises crew in a manner that is consistent with Lean/OPEX manufacturing principles.*
  11. Evaluates performance to determine retention of probationary employees and reclassification of employees from Trainee or “C” to “B” and from “B” to “A.” Prepares appropriate documentation to substantiate actions. Makes recommendations on wage increases.*
  12. Insures employees follow policies and procedures regarding personal conduct, use of time, claiming work, clocking on/off jobs, etc. Identifies performance problems in the crew and determines the appropriate corrective action (training, discipline, demotion, etc.) Documents incidents to support action taken.*
  13. Supervises crew in a manner that is consistent with provisions in the labor agreement. Participates in labor relations activities such as grievances and arbitrations. Provides information and documentation to support Company’s actions.*
  14. Insures crew is performing their jobs in a safe manner and using the appropriate PPE. Conducts monthly inspections of work centers under his/her supervision. Participates in monthly safety meetings. Conducts investigations of accidents and/or incidents.*
  15. Expedites hot orders. Redirects resources and personnel in order to meet shipment dates.*
  16. Coordinates with Production Control and dispatchers on work flow and order sequence.*
  17. Coordinates with outside vendors when necessary on work being contracted out and on quality issues.*
  18. Interviews external candidates and conducts job visits. Makes recommendations on employment.*
  19. Coordinates with Purchasing on the requisition of tools and supplies.*
  20. Attends Company sponsored training classes, special technical and administrative courses, trade shows, and exhibits to keep abreast of and well informed on new developments pertinent to the technical, administrative, and supervisory aspects involved.*
  21. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Plant Manager, Manufacturing Manager, or VP General Manager.*

Special Location/Position Requirements:

Job Specifications (Work Experience, Skills, Abilities, etc.)

  • 5 years’ manufacturing experience required.
  • 3 to 5 years’ supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience supervising a union workforce preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints required.

Education Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:

Daily exposure to shop conditions, which are variable depending on the task assigned, but are generally dirty. Is subject to shop noise. Involves extensive standing and walking. Skin and eyes are subject to drying and irritating fumes, vapors and solutions controlled to OSHA standards. Works both in and outdoors with sometimes dusty or confining work areas when in the shop/lab.
