Job Summary:
The Referral Specialist obtains authorizations for office visits, surgeries, diagnostic tests, and interventions, collaborating with insurance companies to ensure proper documentation and follow-up on requests. They assist the surgery scheduler with coordinating surgeries and pre-operative appointments and collect information on deductibles and copayments. The specialist works with staff to ensure payments are collected or payment plans arranged, supports patients and faculty by managing check-in and check-out processes, and ensures accurate demographic and insurance information. They also handle copayments, prepare medical records, obtain notes from referring physicians, process reports, manage phone inquiries, and provide backup support for Medical Records.

Environmental Hazards:
Possible exposure to hazardous material, hot and cold, blood borne pathogens.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, stoop, reach, stand, walk, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodations.
Ability to sit for extended periods; utilize computer, monitor, and keyboard for up to eight hours.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required:
- High School/GED
- 6 (six) month related job experience in a medical office or equivalent experience
- 1+ years' experience with insurance verification or equivalent experience
- Working knowledge of CPT & ICD-10 Codes.

Skills, Proficiencies, and Knowledge:
- Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills required, along with 25 WPM typing and relevant computer experience; familiarity with EPIC EHR is a plus.
- Effective teamwork with colleagues is essential.
- Logical reasoning skills to assess situations and determine actions are necessary.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining productivity in volume and quality is expected.
- Proficient planning and organization are crucial for optimizing departmental resources.
