JOB SUMMARY

The Paralegal will be assigned responsibilities involving legal research work, investigating facts, and preparing documents to provide technical legal assistance to all Attorneys within the Legal Division of the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides support for attorneys; composes and prepares various legal documents, correspondence, and forms
  • Researches legal data; prepares rough drafts and/or final forms of briefs and arguments
  • Conducts investigations and compiles data for use in case preparation
  • Answers inquiries concerning legal issues from the public and agency personnel
  • Assists attorneys in ensuring that deadlines are met for court filings; files orders, judgments, pleadings, briefs and other documents on behalf of attorneys
  • Provides file maintenance for hard copy and electronic files, including scanning case files, copying pleadings and maintaining case logs for review and action by attorneys
  • Operates a variety of office equipment; screens phone calls and receives visitors; opens, reviews and distributes mail
  • Processes incoming checks received by the Legal Division as assigned
  • Assists with training and cross training of other Legal Division employees as requested
  • Assists in projects as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience requirements consist of

  • An associate degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field and one (1) year of paralegal or legal assistant experience;
  • OR a Certified Paralegal Certification approved by a national association or American Bar Association (ABA) approved program and two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or a legal assistant;
  • OR a high school diploma or equivalent education and three (3) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates with administrative law, governmental agency or program experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Exhibit manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate a computer, keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Ability to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels, with or without aids. Ability to communicate clearly. Physical ability to lift up to 15 pounds, to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach. Duties are normally performed in an office environment with a moderate noise level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Travel is required for this position. Applicants must have reliable transportation and be willing and able to perform all job-related travel. Possession and maintenance of a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License is also required.

Oklahoma Tax Commission’s normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. This schedule may require minor flexibility based on the needs of the agency.

Telework may be required based on the needs of the agency, division, and section. If applicable, applicant must be willing and able to work BOTH on-site and telework at an off-site location, generally in the applicant’s home. Applicant must have a secure internet connection and a dedicated telephone (landline) or smart phone device during scheduled working hours.
