Mechanical Design Engineer

As required by our governmental client, this position requires being a US Citizen, lawful resident alien, citizen of American Samoa or other territory owning permanent allegiance to the United States.

A highly motivated, energetic mechanical design engineer is needed for a fast-paced growing R&D group with the intent to commercialize new product development. Engineer needs to evaluate, select, and apply engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to concurrent new products in development. Applies engineering judgment in making design decisions, adaptations, and modifications to projects. Must be able to perform design, development, evaluation, and control functions on complex engineering projects, regularly offering innovative solutions to technical problems. New products may include supporting commercial and government aviation, unmanned / remote piloted systems, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) systems, space, defense, emergency services and other industries. Experience in one or more of the listed interests is highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Estimated Starting Salary Range for Mechanical Design Engineer: $75,000.00 - $90,000: Pay commensurate with experience.
  • Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K and other possible benefits as provided.

Mechanical Design Engineer Responsibilities Include:

  • Job functions will include significant design and design review responsibilities, engineering calculations, studies, detailed design.
  • Define bill of material (BOM) for multiples projects.
  • Directly reports to New Product Development Technical Lead.
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Interacts with other engineers and/or designers internal and external to the organization.
  • Ability to interpret design direction and requirements.
  • Design tasks include creating 2D layouts and 3D models from sketches and engineering data to determine size, shape and arrangement of components; also defining part requirements including dimensions, tolerances, finishes, material and clearance.
  • Produce installation, assembly and detail drawings with 2D layouts and 3D models.
  • Perform first order analysis to support designs as required to complete assigned tasks or resolve technical issues.
  • Responsible for reporting on work progress.
  • Provides input to the Project Execution Plan.
  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision.
  • May interact with clients, partners, vendors, and subject matter experts as needed.
  • Capable of assembling prototypes or directing production support.
  • Create test plans and perform functional proof of concept tests.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Mechanical Design Engineer Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university required.
  • Typically, five years related engineering experience.
  • Microsoft Office experience required.
  • Ability to work with engineering software packages is required.
  • Basic knowledge of Systems Engineering and requirement generation experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in multiple production technologies is a must. Example: CNC machining, injection molding, casting, rapid prototyping (metal and plastic), additive manufacturing, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required, fluent in English.
  • Must be an energetic self-starter.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Provide 2D layouts and 3D models.
  • Ability to perform first order Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with GD&T is a plus.
  • Demonstrates advanced ability to work with various engineering software packages.
  • Possesses advanced technical skills and understanding of interdisciplinary design processes.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload for self and potentially others.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
