Position Information Position Title Director of Learning and Community Engagement Job Description The Director of Learning and Community Engagement reports to the Gilcrease Museum Executive Director and is responsible for implementing the museum’s general education mission and philosophy through innovative engagement and learning opportunities for all ages. The Director will help guide and articulate the museum’s role as a community and university resource and will be an effective spokesperson and ambassador for the department.Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
- Leads the museum’s interpretive, educational, programming, and outreach efforts to provide innovative participatory learning opportunities for diverse and multi-generational audiences
- Oversees the organization, administration and training of the Learning and Community Engagement team to ensure excellence in the presentation of museum programs, educational programs, departmental operations and customer service at Gilcrease Museum and the Henry Zarrow Center for Art & Education
- Develops and facilitates engaging programs for adult, teen, family, university students, and K-12 students in collaboration and with the support of the Learning and Community Engagement team
- Supervises the Volunteer Services Coordinator, coordinates the development of educational content for gallery tours and docent training and reviews
- Supervises the Gilcrease on Wheels Program Manager and Assistant
- Supervises the Learning and Community Engagement department staff, interns and volunteers
- Coordinates all interns for the museum, including receiving applications and maintaining history and performance files
- In collaboration with the curatorial and Helmerich Center staff, and with support from volunteer services, establishes long-range plans for the Learning and Community Engagement department as well as assist in the development of the museum’s education goals; participates in the development of future strategic plans, implementation, and assessment
- Works with the curatorial, exhibitions, and other museum staff to conceive and develop innovative programs and interpretive materials for exhibitions and on-site or outreach educational programming that meet the needs of local school systems as well as provide quality programming for all ages
- Demonstrates commitment to broadening program and service audiences to include under-represented populations
- Collaborates with the Development & Membership departments to implement the acquisition, upgrade, and retention strategies to grow the museum’s membership base
- Works with curators and other museum and university staff in researching, developing and producing interpretive materials for varied constituencies (i.e. school groups, adults, youths, volunteers, senior citizens and the general public), including brochures, gallery guides, newsletter articles, web content, educator resource materials, and other presentations
- Works cooperatively with other Museum departments to effectively plan and improve working methods for the successful delivery of public programs, particularly AV/IT production, Membership, Special Events, Development, Volunteer Services, and Facilities and Grounds
- Develops and implements evaluation processes for learning and community engagement programs and the staff responsible for its presentation; develops measurements by which all learning and community engagement programs are assessed to ascertain how effectively the program meets the needs of the community
- Prepares and manages the Learning and Community Engagement departmental budget
- Works with the development staff to secure funding, grants and other financial resources to meet departmental goals
- Collaborates with marketing staff to promote museum programs and develops educational resources and materials for the website including program podcast and webinars; contributes to museum publications, publicity, and social media
- Acts as principal spokesperson for the Learning and Community Engagement department to articulate the museum’s educational philosophy and long-range plans
- Builds relationships within the community to foster valuable collaborations and partnerships
- Attends all required meetings to successfully carry out the above responsibilities
- Participates in professional development opportunities that support and enhance the position
- Performs any other duties as needed/assigned
- Ability to work as a team member in developing educational activities that are consistent with learning standards and that meet curriculum requirements
- Ability to effectively manage and direct staff
- Ability to effectively speak to large and small groups of people to articulate the museum’s role as a community and university resource
- Proficiency in PC or Mac software applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Equivalent Education/Experience
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Art Education, Art History, History, or Museum Studies
- Eight or more years of experience in a teaching or museum environment
Physical Demands Special Job Dimensions:
