What we do

Kentik has a rapidly growing engineering team and is looking for an Engineering Operations Director to help architect and drive organizational strategies that will serve as a foundation for our growth. In the role, you will report directly to the VP of Engineering and facilitate efforts between engineering managers and teams, as well as interface with other departments within the company on cross-functional projects.

What you'll do

You will be responsible for Engineering’s rhythm of the business, goals & key results, and getting things done. Additionally, you will be responsible for the full Engineering budget and collaborate with Finance and People Partners on organizational planning. You will build connections across the company and serve as a bidirectional advocate for engineering and other business needs.

  • Be the lieutenant to the VP of Engineering, advising and able to be a stand-in during meetings and speak on behalf of engineering
  • Keep the VP of Engineering apprised of the state of operations within the engineering department
  • Work to solve problems, mediate disputes, and deal with issues before they are escalated to executive management
  • Facilitate creation of Engineering staff goals and key performance indicators
  • Manage and drive engineering leadership activities such as stand-ups, staff meetings, all hands and quarterly business review preparation
  • Own the budget and work with finance to ensure meeting fiscal responsibilities
  • Managing headcount and resource distribution with the TA team
  • Work closely with the People team to coordinate performance management for the full Engineering organization
  • Collaborate with other operations leaders and executives to drive projects and initiatives
  • Implement and maintain systems and processes that streamline internal engineering operations

What you'll bring

  • 3+ years of engineering organizational/leadership experience focused on strategic organizational initiatives, ideally at a SaaS B2B company
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • Exceptional leadership and management skills, with the ability to develop and communicate a vision that inspires and motivates staff
  • Experience with organizational change management and transformation
  • Experience in an Agile and Waterfall development environment
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment in which resources may not be under your direct control
  • Strong analytical, strategic conceptual thinking, strategic planning, and execution skills
  • Data visualization creation experience

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with engineering practices at mid-to-late stage startups
  • Operational Excellence or Center of Excellence team leadership experience

Our tech stack

  • Our core data engine and platform are primarily written in Go
  • We use Node.js + Express for application serving, and React as our primary UI framework
  • We also use some JS and Python for tooling/scripting
  • In addition to our own database, we use Postgres, Kafka, Mysql, and Redis
  • Internal and public APIs expose both rest/json and gRPC endpoints
  • Haproxy, Envoy for API traffic routing and balancing
  • Github for source control, PRs, issues
  • Jenkins for automated builds

Our compensation philosophy encompasses a fair program for all in order to attract, engage and retain talented individuals who will drive our business and wow our customers.

The compensation range for this position is: $155,000 - $250,000. This range reflects the low and high end of the U.S. compensation range Kentik reasonably and generally expects to pay the hired candidate in this role. The actual compensation offered may be lower or higher than the stated range depending on various factors, including but not limited to:

  • Experience with the skill sets required for success
  • Demonstrated competencies and potential
  • A geographic market-based approach
