Job Summary

Under direction and within the scope of policies and guidelines of the Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau (Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice), provides transportation and escorts of mechanically restrained and unrestrained youth from Detention to court and other locations outside of the Detention Home by performing the following duties.

Job Description

All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Review all court dockets and scheduled appointments for youth to determine the schedule of escorts and transports.
  • Secure, according to training and guidelines, youth in mechanical restraints when necessary and as ordered, for transportation outside of the Detention Home.
  • Escort youth to court with the youth's assigned Counselor /OJA Worker.
  • Transport youths, both restrained and unrestrained, outside of the Detention Home in a county vehicle for the purpose of medical, dental, placement or mental health services appointments.
  • Intervene in cases of attempted escape or assault to restrain a youth physically, utilizing the least restrictive forms of intervention.
  • Complete reports regarding any incident that occurs during any transport or escort.
  • Maintain a log of transports and escorts performed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

Skill in understanding the underlying causes of social problems; custody operations procedures and in eliciting pertinent personal information.

Knowledge of personal computers; of the principles and practices of sociology applicable to juvenile casework; of county and state regulations pertaining to juveniles' care; of verbal and nonverbal techniques for de-escalation and communicating clear directives; of physical restraint techniques, as well as safe and functional techniques for applying and removing mechanical restraints; and of departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to work tactfully with others; to establish effective interpersonal relationships; to gain respect and cooperation of others; to stay alert and vigilant; to handle stressful situations; and to create a constructive atmosphere for crisis problem solving.

SUPERVISORY SKILLS

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in sociology or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of full-time paid employment in juvenile work or a closely related position for one year of the required education for a maximum substitution of four years.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid OK Driver’s License possessed for at least 6 months

Defensive driving through Tulsa County within 6 months of hired.

First Aid & CPR Certification

CPI Certification or equivalent
