Job Description

Position:

Autopsy Laboratory Assistant: PTE

Location:

OCME- Eastern Division - Tulsa

Salary:

USD 16.44 Hourly

Shift:

Day shift consisting of 4 and 8-hour shifts with rotating weekends (typically every 3rd weekend) up to 999 hours per year

Description of Duties:

Recruits must meet the physical and mental requirements of the job. An autopsy laboratory assistant is sometimes exposed to violent, unusual, unnatural, suspicious, and other types of death. This position is physically demanding and rigorous, requiring the ability to lift, push, pull, and bend repetitively. Recruits must be able to push, pull, slide, and roll bodies weighing 250-400 + lbs. An autopsy laboratory assistant is a visible representative of OCME and must follow the policies and procedures to maintain a professional and safe work environment.

Typical Functions:

Intake/Release of human bodies under OCME jurisdiction*.

Document/Update case log continuously.

Answer telephone calls and forward messages to appropriate staff members as necessary.

Stock multiple Autopsy Lab areas

Assist with inventory receipt and delivery notifications and help with inventory organization

Perform Radiologic procedures (CT, X-ray).

Washing, drying, folding, and putting away laundry.

Complete tasks appointed on the checklist.

Cleaning: including sweeping, mopping, stainless steel polishing, taking out trash and recycling, emptying biohazard bins

Document personal effects

Maintaining proper chain of custody processes and procedures

Taking photographs and entering proper supplements

Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or the Deputy Chief

Training:

Training will be for 2-4 weeks. The level of skill development will determine the duration of the training period, but a minimum of 2 weeks can be expected.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Knowledge of the Medical Examiners office and 1-2 years of experience preferred

Skills and Competencies:

Experience with Microsoft 365 preferred, including:

Outlook

SharePoint

Excel

Word

Must be a self-starter

Special Requirements:

OCME employees must possess and maintain the physical and mental stamina to perform the required work and be willing to accept the physical discomforts inherent to this position.

Recruits must be 21 years of age, possess a valid ID, and be able to pass a rigid character background investigation.

OCME cannot simultaneously employ any funeral home or law enforcement agency employees.

Recruits cannot be related to a current OCME employee.

Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel typically associated with this position. Some positions may require possession of a valid Oklahoma Driver’s license to operate state-owned vehicles. Some agencies may have determined positions in this job family to be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8
