Job Summary

Under direction and within the scope of sectional policies, procedures, and guidelines established by state statues, federal regulations, and other entities, provides intake services to juveniles referred to Tulsa County Juvenile Detention Home by performing the following duties.

Job Description

All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.

Essential Job Functions

  • Process all admissions and releases of juveniles.
  • Inform the juvenile of the steps in the process at the initiation of admission.
  • Provide security for those arriving and pending assignment to a detention unit.
  • Initiate resident confinement records and prepare file.
  • Determine that the juvenile is legally committed to the facility.
  • Conduct searches of the juvenile and possessions; ensuring personal property is recorded and stored and/or determined and records disposition of property.
  • Perform screenings and assessments on all juveniles immediately following their referral to the Detention facility.
  • Ensure admissions are provided a shower and hair care, if necessary.
  • Issue the resident the appropriate clothing and bedding.
  • Assigned housing unit consistent with policies and procedures.
  • Record basic personal data and information to be used for mail and visiting lists.
  • Assists juveniles in notifying their families of their admission and procedures for mail and visiting.
  • Ensure the juvenile’s JOLTS number is recorded on records.
  • Provide written orientation materials to the juvenile about policies, procedures, operations, and rules of the facility.
  • Developing community ties by ensuring phone calls and visits are provided.
  • Conducts individual/group counseling sessions; interviews juvenile to elicit background information; collaborates with child guidance and educate staff about juveniles; maintains logs of unit activity as prescribed; prepares incident reports, adjustment summaries and submits unit repair request; rewards appropriate behavior as part of an established behavior modification system; encourages juvenile to discuss their behavior and personal habits/attitudes; guides discussion towards the establishment and reinforcement of appropriate behavior patterns.
  • Assists juvenile in adjusting to detention rules and regulations and the behavior medication system; utilize safe physical management restraint procedures for highly troublesome juvenile, as necessary; requisitions and maintains special interest activity supplies; encourages and supports juveniles’ involvement in recreational, educational, and religious programs offerings; inspect living area of juveniles daily to check for cleanliness, vandalism and contraband.
  • Escort juveniles to various locations throughout the facility for different activities; escorts and/or drives juveniles to various locations outside of the Center for medical and psychological health appointments while maintaining security measures dictated by policy and training, as necessary; inspect other facility living unis periodically to check for cleanliness and for contraband or escape attempts.
  • Attends training sessions to learn the practices and procedures utilized in performing juveniles’ detention custody and counseling work.
  • Providing counseling to juveniles on personal adjustment issues and behavior change.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of behavior patterns which are symptoms of illness or emotional stress in juveniles, group work principles and methods as they apply to delinquent juveniles. The social factors which result in institutionalization of juveniles and the attitudes and habits of juveniles in custody or protective care and juvenile detention counseling and departmental rules and regulations.

Ability to oversee the activities of individuals and groups of juveniles to observe their behavior patterns in custody or protective care; work and communication with delinquent juveniles, learn the practices and procedures of juvenile detention custody and counseling work.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with residents; speak, read, and write. act quickly and calmy in an emergency, maintaining professional boundaries regarding appropriate behaviors, engage in positive in activities that build self-esteem and encourages participation in therapeutic programs.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Contact Management systems, Internet software and Word Processing software.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience

60 college credits from an accredited college or university, and over one year of satisfactory full time paid employment in social work, juvenile; or a combination of education and work experience may be considered.

Language Skills

Ability read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License possessed for at least 6 months

Defensive driving through Tulsa County within 6 months of hired.
