WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The National Underwriting Consultant will act as an overall thought leader in the underwriting and analytics field. This position will perform mathematical analysis, underwriting and utilize actuarial modeling software to provide clients, teams and leadership with statistical findings and conclusions.

A GLIMPSE INTO YOUR DAY

  • Oversee underwriting capabilities nationally.
  • Help develop/train on various strategies including but not limited to: PBM strategy, self-funded, captives, Reference Based Pricing (RBP).
  • Source, select, implement and coordinate training for new vendors for national underwriting practice.
  • Be a resource for producers nationally – assist in prospect situations and existing client situations.
  • Conducts analysis and data development for a broad range of financial and underwriting functions.
  • Summarizes and evaluates large amounts of data creating customized reporting, forecasting and modeling as part of a broader team working on large projects across a variety of clients.
  • Assists in preparing the RFP analysis and templates for all lines of health & welfare business.
  • Analyzes reports from various data analytics vendors, TPAs and/or carriers as needed.
  • Analyzes and assists in making recommendations on client strategy and cost containment initiatives.
  • Cross-trains others on use of financial tools and methodology and serves as backup for various departmental functions as needed.
  • Works closely with a variety of individuals including underwriting/analysts, sales, consulting, health management and leadership.
  • Designs, develops and prepares accurate and timely reports and analysis, providing financial guidance and general direction for influencing clients’ decisions and the achievement of strategic goals.
  • Develops claims & utilization benchmarking reports to compare utilization to other employers’ programs by industry or geography and provide results to client in appropriate format.
  • Request for Proposals (RFPs): Gathers benefits information from a variety of sources (such as electronic files from the client and carriers), develops RFP templates, coordinates responses from the carriers, inputs data and maintains all appropriate documentation. Prepares draft presentation to client and team leadership.
  • Understands and demonstrates project management and consulting skills.
  • Prepares ad-hoc analysis.
  • Performs other projects, duties, and tasks, as assigned.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN THIS ROLE

  • State Life, Accident & Health Insurance License is required and must be maintained.
  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Statistics preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant and progressive experience or equivalent combination of education and job-related experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities through successfully managing projects, training and process improvement.
  • Exceptional ability in working with complex software and systems both as currently used by the company and alternative industry standards.
  • Based on area of expertise, demonstrated application of in-depth financial, accounting and business knowledge.
  • Advanced presentation skills to clients, within department and to project teams.
  • Work cross-functionally and at all levels as both a self-starter and in a team environment.
  • Think critically, creatively, analytically, and with sound judgment to develop and provide comprehensive, in-depth financial analyses related to period results (financial statements), business case development, and ad hoc projects.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize work in a well-organized manner, provide clear insights / directions and as needed, influence the work of others in the department, with minimal supervision.
  • Think and work independently and work very flexible and long hours as required, including out-of-town travel.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, ability to travel to client sites and reliable transportation.
